I'm going on a tour of Ireland in July with some family and wanted to spend a few days alone at the end. We commence the tour in Shannon. How can I spend three nights (two and one half days) there alone without traveling too far out as I won't have a car? I'm open to anything!!! Thank you all in advance.
The town of Shannon itself is small and modern (built in the 1960s on reclaimed marshland). Given the airport, it has good bus connections to many places. It is only about 15 minutes by bus from Bunratty, which has the castle and folk park. On that same bus line is Limerick, a lovely and interesting historic city to visit. To the north, there's Ennis, which I understand is a great place to hear Irish traditional music. Further north, you could take a day tour to the Burren -- if you won't have already been there on your family tour.
If budget is an issue: Bunratty, and you can take a taxi (booked ahead) to the airport.
If you can splurge a bit, Dromoland Castle, which is totally lovely and you might enjoy walking/biking/walking on their grounds, and then a quick taxi (or private driver) to the airport. They offer some two-night specials...inquire if you do not see specials on line for the days you need.
If you just want to do some additional touring on your own with flexibility to see what you want/when you want, contact Tony McGann at Doolin Taxi for a quote (short drives, multi-days, etc.)
