Hello Travelers!
We were planning to take a cruise to see the Cliffs of Moher, but they seem so close to the Aran Islands. To save time, does anyone know if you can see the cliffs from the Aran Island Ferry?
We're going in July!
Thanks so much!
Angela
Angela,
You might catch a brief glimpse of the cliffs as you pull away from the dock in Doolin. But since the ferry is veering sharply off in a northwesterly direction and the cliffs are southwest of the village, the chances of doing so - even on that rare sunny day - are slim.
It may depend on which ferry co you use and where you sail from and which Aran Island you're going to. I do know that there is a combined cruise from Doolin that takes you to Inis Oirr (Inisheer, one of the smaller islands) and also does a cruise to the cliffs on the way back. There are also ferries (Aran Island Ferries) sailing from nearer to Galway but I'm not sure if you see the cliffs from them. We went to Inisheer from Doolin and did see the cliffs from the sea and it was marvelous - you don't see that view when you visit them.
Were you planning on staying on one of the islands or just a day visit? If staying overnight then I think the bigger island (Inis Mor) has more to see and do. I did love our short visit to Inis Oirr though - it has a beautiful lighthouse, an old shipwreck, O'Brien's fort and a couple of old stone churches. Very scenic.
