scenic beauty near dublin

hi I am flying from toronto to dublin with my wife and 2 children(both under 10). we will arrive at 5:30 am so I am planning to stay in or near dublin to wear off our jet leg for few hours, like till 11:00 am, especially children's. My wife's wants to see castles or the european feel and I want to experience the greenery and scenic views. we have kept cathedrals and churches for amsterdam/london and also with children I don't want to go to any liquor attractions.
Should I stay near the airport or at dublin city center or in surrounding where it is easier to get to the train station .

I know it's a very short trip to dublin but i have no other choice for now.

Thank you

That's a 6.5 hour flight. They'll probably serve drinks and either a meal or a snack after departure. Figure 2 hours or more before they clear away and turn the lights down. Then they'll wake you about an hour before landing. That gives you less than 4 hours of quiet time overnight. Unless you all can sleep through everything - and even then, you'll have 6 hours sleep at best, you'll be pretty tired when you get to Dublin (cranky kids?). Presumably you'll have luggage with you. Your options are to rent a car (more below) or store your luggage in the city in or near the train station (you'll have to find out if it's possible at whichever station you are departing from and what time they open in the morning). St. Stephen's Green is a pretty park in the center, a few minutes' walk from Trinity College. It opens at 7.30 am (except Sundays, 9.30 am). Most sights and attractions don't open before 10 am.

Car rental - I don't think that's a solution. First and foremost, it's a really bad idea to drive after a longhaul flight. Driving jetlagged and/or sleep-deprived is equivalent to driving under the influence. Add to that, Ireland, like the UK, drives on the left, so that's another distraction/difficulty. Then you may hit traffic getting into Dublin and you'll have to allow enough time to return the rental car and get to the train station. You could hire a car and driver to take you out for scenic views and that sounds like your best option.

Do you meant that you will only have from 5:30 am to 11 am in Dublin?

We also flew out of Toronto with our two kids last summer ( 11 and 8 at the time) so I could write a bunch but wanted to just be clear on what you are looking for before I write a novel ;)

Hi Sharon. I meant that we will check in the hotel so that we can sleep for few hours and then once we fresh we can utilize the whole day in Dublin. Our flight is next day. So please share you experience and suggestions.

Sounds good.

I would stick to Dublin proper with one day... this means to some extent giving up the castle and scenic country side.

My kids loved St Stephen's green. The park is gorgeous and the playgrounds were fantastic... a lot different than what we tend to see here in North America... the Irish seem to trust people's common sense more so play grounds are a lot more like they were when I was a kid ;)

They also really enjoyed Dublinia... We walked a lot and you definitely get the european charm by doing that. Treat wise, we enjoyed the ice cream at Murphy's and the hot chocolate and truffles at Butler's.
We had 3 days in Dublin and love the city.

Let me know if you have any questions or if I can be of any help
