My sister and I will be renting a car in Ireland and I've just started looking into it. On the Europe Car site, it looks like the SAT/NAV costs extra. Is that something I should pay extra to get or will the Google Maps feature on my iphone work well enough? Thanks!
Google maps will be fine. A suggestion I have is to bring a phone holder so you can watch while driving. You also might want 5o download the Google maps in the area in which you’re driving in case there’s no cell service.
Google Maps works great in Ireland. I'd recommend that you ensure your rental car has CarPlay or Android Auto capabilities, as appropriate, as having the map displayed on a screen on your dashboard is IME the most useful. Also IME most rental cars have those capabilities.
Like the others, Google maps works fine. If you don’t have data overseas or in case you’re in an area with no connectivity, download a map or maps of the areas you’ll be visiting. With your phone in airplane mode, it turns into a GPS.
The last few times I’ve rented in Europe, the cars had built in navigation systems we did NOT have to pay for. However, since I had everything bookmarked on Google maps, we just used Google maps.
If you use your phone, ensure you have cables for both USB-2 and USB-C ports. I’ve have rental cars with one or the other, while one vehicle had both. The EU standard is USB-C.
Thanks so much for your responses. They were all very helpful!
