Can someone enlighten me on a "shortcut" between Doolin and Dingle using a ferry which is a shorter route than going around Limerick? Thank you!
I believe you take the N67 south from Doolin to Killimer and take the Tarbert ferry, then the N69 to Tralee, then the N86 to Dingle. Here's a link to the ferry website: http://www.discoverireland.ie/Activities-Adventure/killimer-tarbert-car-ferry/71068
What Nancy said sounds about right, but the more direct web connect is shannonferries.com.
A quick ride, works like a charm. You can pay online so it's done, we got in line about half hour before sailing, great service. Saves maybe an hour and it's worth it.
If the horse races are happening near Tralee that day you'll have traffic. Head for Conor Pass, fabulous up there!
I think if you book on-line with Shannon ferries website, you save some money. Even if you don't it surely saves time. Enjoy. Dingle is my favorite spot.
We were wondering the exact same thing. According to Google Maps, the ferry route is longer (time-wise). It says going through Limerick is 3 hours whereas taking the ferry is 3:20. Any more thoughts on this? Is Google just wrong? We're struggling planning this vacation. Way too much to see and not enough time. ;)

kjozwowski-as I recall, it is about an hour faster according to folks who have actually done it, perhaps dependent on time of day, rush hour, etc. Even if it is the same time-wise, the idea is that driving through Limerick is no party, and a nice ferry boat ride is a better way to spend time, I recommend it. It's a nice ride south to the ferry, more country driving, less Limerick driving.
Have fun!
