We recently completed our 10 day trip in Ireland. We had a fantastic time! My husband and I enjoy being outside and accomplished 3-7 mile hikes every other day. We wanted to share a bit about our time in Killarney with you.
Another unforgettable experience was the Gap of Dunloe. We took a shuttle from Ross Castle to Kate Kearney's Cottage and then walked the seven-mile route through the Gap before returning by boat across the lakes. Although it's referred to as a hike, it's actually a leisurely walk on a paved road through breathtaking scenery. We completed it on a warm 82°F day and would gladly do it again. Just be sure to bring plenty of water and bug spray—the horse flies were the only unpleasant surprise.
While some visitors choose to drive, cycle, or take a traditional horse-drawn jaunting car through the Gap of Dunloe, we found walking to be the perfect way to experience it. The road is narrow and shared by hikers, cyclists, horses, and vehicles, making driving likely more stressful than enjoyable. Walking allowed us to stop whenever we wanted to admire the mountain views, lakes, stone bridges, and peaceful surroundings without worrying about traffic. But, make sure to complete the hike by the time the boat leaves Lord Brandon's Cottage.
We also loved our time in Killarney. The town had a lively atmosphere each evening with wonderful restaurants, music, and friendly people. We were fortunate to be there during the county football championship celebrations, which filled the streets with excitement and local pride. Between the charm of Killarney, the beauty of the Ring of Kerry and Gap of Dunloe, this part of Ireland became one of our favorite memories of the trip.
