On my last trip to Ireland I nearly had a mental and physical breakdown driving in Dublin with a stick shift and driving on the left. I was fine out in the country, so i would like to rent a car on my way out of Dublin, heading to Wicklow and then on to Galway. Can you suggest a reasonably priced rent a car closet to the M50 on my way out of town. Also suggestions on insurance!
Just returned from Dublin/Wicklow. Enterprise Car rental at the airport was excellent and it's easy to get on the highway from there. I rented a five speed as well. Highway driving is easier than city, especially with the roundabouts. I always use Enterprise because I prefer their service. I take the full insurance. It's not cheap, but peace of mind is worth it to me. I paid 198 euros for the week for a VW Golf, which included full insurance as well as a high priced fuel top up at the end because the gas station would not accept my credit card when I went to fill it before dropping off.
We rented from Sixt at the airport and had a great experience. We rented automatic though....
For Wicklow you might want to be on the south side of town. There's a Hertz office on South Circular Road in Dublin that makes getting to the mountains much easier. The roads in that area are suburban but within about 10 minutes you'll be on the Old Military Road.
