3 of us (including a 10 year old) have 4 days in Ireland starting in Larne and ending at Shannon Airport. I had planned on renting a car, but the drop off fee makes the car $200/day! Any suggestions in less expensive options that allow us to see Dublin a bit.

Hi calafamily-the issue, I believe, is that dropping the car in another country adds a lot of money to the price. If you were able to take the train to Dublin, you can rent for a reasonable price, 40-50 euro per day, plus Super CDW which might add another 20-30 per day but is recommended, in my opinion. Is there train or bus service from Larne to Belfast so you can get the train to Dublin? We rented from the Budget office on Lower Drumcondra, Dublin, dropped off in Cork, and were very happy with them.

I agree with Dave. Take the train to Dublin, then rent. The drop off fee between cities in Republic of Ireland is minimal. The high cost comes, as he said, from renting in Northern Ireland and dropping in the Republic.
