Rent a car in Dublin or Cork?

My son and I are looking forward to 10 days in Ireland in June (then he will backpack other parts of Europe for 3 weeks). We will arrive in Dublin at 7am and plan to stay the night in Dublin. We will then head to Cork, Kinsale and the Dingle area. So the question is, should I rent a car in Dublin or take a train to Cork and rent a car there? We definitely want to get off the beaten track and see the small towns and the beauty of western Ireland. Also, we are trying not to back track but I have to eventually get back to Dublin for the return flight home. Any other suggestions are welcome!

We are renting a car on our way out of Dublin. Many people have told me not to bother with a car while in Dublin.

We are flying into Dublin, staying 3 nights, heading back to the airport and getting our rental before we head over to Kilkenny
