Recommended stop for the night on the train from Dublin (Heuston) to Tralee?

Hello! It would be really helpful to hear any recommendations for a stop for the night on the train ride from Dublin (Heuston) to Tralee. Mallow seems logical, since that is where we need to stop to change trains anyway. Does that sound about right, or am I missing anything? I'd hate to miss a hidden gem along the way. This is for Monday, September 2nd. I know it's a ways off but we are finding some hotels are already booked up, so we want to get reservations made now.

Here's the backstory: This will be at the end of a long travel day for us, having flown non-stop from Seattle into Dublin, arriving Sept. 2. We originally planned to spend the night in Dublin before hopping on the train (and then the bus) to Dingle. But Dublin hotel prices on Sept. 2 are exorbitant - nearly double compared to when we return on Sept. 6 to explore Dublin for 6 days. So, we are thinking let's go ahead and hop on our train, get out of town, and stop and stay someplace less expensive.

BTW, I know it is most convenient to rent a car in Ireland but we are committed to taking trains and buses and believe we have that part pretty much figured out to our satisfaction. It'll be my husband and me and we've travel enough together that we are not put off but a little complexity (we plan it out so we don't exceed what we want to manage).

Thank you in advance for any guidance you can share!

I think you'll like Mallow.

I've stayed in the Hibernian Hotel there and am happy to recommend it. Just checked their rates for that night- 77 Euro for a twin, 116 Euro for a double, both Room only.

For the quality of the hotel and room rates in Ireland I'm happy enough with those rates, but then I don't know your budget. Personally if I'd got that far I'd press on to Tralee (or maybe take a connecting flight from Dublin to Kerry airport) then bus to Tralee but we all travel differently.

But if you want to overnight in Mallow that is my recc.

@isn31c, thank you so much for your response!

Your suggestion to consider a connecting flight from Dublin to Kerry made us realize we were overly focused on maintaining our original plan to take the train. While we still want to experience the train, we can do that on the way back from Dingle to Dublin.

So now, instead, we are planning to fly from Dublin to Kerry on Sept. 2. Then we can stay somewhere in Kerry for the night. Or maybe even take that bus or a taxi to Tralee (looks like a relatively close drive), stay there, and take the bus on to Dingle in the morning. There appear to be good options.

For hotels we are always trying to find that trifecta of great location, safe & comfortable quality, and reasonable price. The Hibernian would have hit all 3 for us.

Thank you, again!
