Hi All, I’m looking for recommendations for stops along the way from Doolin to Dingle in
September. We checkout of Doolin at 9:30 and can’t check into our accommodations in Dingle until 5 pm so no rush to get to Dingle. I was thinking of stopping in Limerick ( King John’s Castle) or Adare or both. Any where else I should take a look at?
You could stop in Tralee, the last town on the "mainland" of Ireland before the Dingle Peninsula. It's a pleasant town, but most people bypass it because Tralee is only an hour from Dingle town. Another idea is to visit Ennis, County Clare. It's only 45 minutes southeast of Doolin. Ennis is the second-best medieval town all of Ireland (Kilkenny is the best). However, Ennis is southeast of Doolin, and you are going south towards Dingle. So it would involve extra time to stop in Ennis, but it's worth it. As you mentioned, Adare is pleasant.
Another option would be to drive along the coast and take the ferry to Tarbert, using some of the smaller roads to extend your scenic drive time.
The coastal road (the N67) is one of Ireland's great scenic drives on a sunny day with lots of photo ops along the way. We particularly like the seaside village of Kilkee, where there's a broad stretch of sandy beach, plenty of cute little places for lunch or a cup of coffee, and a very pretty cliffside walk that you'll have pretty much all to yourself. Might add that the drive down to the lighthouse on Loop Head peninsula (just south of the town) is quite pretty too if you're up for a decidely off-the-beaten tourist track adventure.
Adare is indeed quite pretty but it gets pretty clobbered with day trippers and tour buses around midday.
Thank you for your suggestions. I’ll take a look and report back when we return from our trip!
