recommendations for seeing Dingle Peninsula

We will be taking the RS 14 day Ireland tour in October, and we will have a day on our own in Dingle Peninsula. We're not bicycle riders, and the area is large to cover. Should we rent a car and driver; take a tour bus and if so, recommendations? What has been the experience of previous travelers?

We did the 14 day tour in May and loved Dingle. Best music experience of the whole tour was in Dingle. The day on our own was very relaxing-I did the walking tour in the morning which was at 10. Met my husband afterwards and then wandered around town, stopped in some of the shops, bought crystal (you will see how it's done at the Dingle factory) and some little gifts. Had a nice lunch, just sat outside and enjoyed the beautiful weather. Oh and ate ice cream! We visited the music shop where you will hear a concert and enjoyed talking to the owner. I wouldn't have wanted to get back on a bus or dealt with renting a car, I don't know if anyone from our group did that. I know a few more high energy people did some long walks. Personally, not having anything planned was a nice change. You can play the day by ear and always decide that morning if you want to do a boat ride to see Funghi the dolphin. The whole tour by the way was truly wonderful.

This tour includes a guided trip around the Dingle peninsula so you don't have to rent a car or take a tour with someone else. There is a short hike from town along the coast to a light house that is easy and a beautiful walk. Directions are in Rick's guidebook. Just enjoying a relaxing day in Dingle is very nice. Be sure to take in the nightly music in the pubs.

I'm sure you will have a wonderful time. We love Dingle. In fact, we will be there in September for 6 nights. Can't wait.

I agree with Marcia and Rosemary. Don't worry about renting a car and driving around on your 'free' day. Its a great day to relax and take in the city at your own pace. There are any number of wonderful pubs to spend time in, lovely shops to browse, or just sit down by the visitor's center and enjoy the scenery of the water. Its a beautiful place. Also - if your tour is like ours was (I'm Marcia's husband so I was also on the tour in May) - you'll be doing plenty of walking/sightseeing/visiting on all the other days. Enjoy this day of respite in a leisurely fashion. You'll not find much better scenery to enjoy.
