Hello,
My husband and I are traveling to Ireland in mid September for 10 days. After landing in Dublin, we plan to head to Wicklow for the day before heading back to Dublin for the evening. In the morning we will head up the coast staying a few nights in NI, before driving the entire URI coast with various stops and stays, ending back in Dublin. We realize it will be packed, but Is this reasonable?
Is heading to Wicklow after an international flight from the US with you driving? If so, not really advisable….
What is URI?
Guessing URI stands for United Republic of Ireland. A misnomer.
You have Ireland and you have Northern Ireland. 2 separate countries. One overseen by a King, the other over seen by a Prime Minster.
Read up on The Troubles to understand both countries..
Driving after an international flight isn’t smart. Body and brain needed time adjust.
Give yourself at least an hour to drive to Wicklow and back and double check that your Dublin accommodation has parking?
As far as reasonable I’d say no….lots of driving instead of interacting, site seeing, enjoying a pint.
I will say on one visit drove from Belfast to Dingle in 5 hours. Willingly admit I regret that drive.
Ireland needs to be savored.
There is no such thing as the United Republic of Ireland, except in the hopes and dreams of many. If you're driving the entire coast counterclockwise, why wouldn't you just go to Wicklow on the way back to Dublin? Also, you can't drive the entire coast in 10 days.
To be honest it is crackers.
You are making no allowance for jet lag and are planning on driving from Dublin to Wicklow for a day. That is not a sensible idea. You need to give yourself a day to recoer from jet lag before setting off in the car. As already pointed out you can include Wicklow as part of the drive.
If you stick to you plan of plan of visiting Wicklow on day 1, it reduces your 10 days down to 9 days. You then talk about 'staying a few nights' in Northern Ireland - that again reduces that number. So how many days are you actually allocating to driving the entire URI (whatever that is - as it isn't a term used here) coast?
Ireland may not look that big compared with the USA but driving in Ireland is slow and it will take a lot longer to cover the ground than you might expect. SLOW DOWN and take time to actually enjoy what Ireland has to offer. It is a place to stop, relax and enjoy rather than rush from place to place and view everything through a car windscreen (and the driver won;t have much chance to admire the views as they will be concentrating on the driving.
You are also missing out on so many wonderful places that won't be covered by driving the coast.
