Random restaurant questions

I've been staying near Cork for the last few days and tomorrow I'm heading to Dublin. I wanted to ask about a few things before we continue our trip just so I know proper etiquette!

1) The restaurant/pub next to our B&B doesn't allow boxing up of leftovers. Is this standard at Irish restaurants? What about elsewhere in Europe? The first day I ordered a sandwich and it was huge so I asked to take the other half to my room upstairs and got the weirdest looks! Do people tend to eat everything on their plates? Or does a lot of food just get thrown away?

2) Where do we pay?? Every time we've asked someone they've just said "wherever you'd like," but where should we ACTUALLY be paying for our meal? Table? Bar? In the US if you just get up from your table before the check people assume you're dine and dashing XD

3) Is it totally unacceptable to go to a different place for dessert? (See #1, cannot finish entire meal.) Back home we often have dinner somewhere and then a few hours later might go somewhere else for dessert. Is that something we should avoid doing here? (Again, weird looks.)

4) Do people tend to dress up more on Saturday nights? We've visited the same restaurant/pub almost every night as it's attached to our hotel. Every other night it has been incredibly laid back and casual. Tonight it was packed with people in very nice (fancy) clothes.

5) Should we just be seating ourselves when we go into restaurants? Or are most places wait to be seated? I've been here a few days and I still can't figure it out.

Thanks in advance!

1) The 'doggy bag' is a very American thing. Do not expect to take left overs anywhere in Europe
2) I would just keep asking.. in this day of credit and debit machines, you really can pay from anywhere.

3) Totally acceptable to go somewhere else for dessert.. Assuming that you are going more to a cafe/desert place for dessert and not going to a full restaurant just for dessert..... not sure how you are getting looks??? How would anyone know that you are going somewhere else?

4) I think it depends on the venue. You may get more people going out on date nights on Saturdays and putting more effort into it.
5) I would ask as you are walking in. It depends on the place.. some places will be happy to have you sit yourself but others ( most ) will ant to seat you

Just returned last night from a week in Ireland (after a week in England). We asked for takeaway boxes for our leftovers, saying "it was just so delicious and we want to take it for a picnic lunch tomorrow." Smiling at the compliment, we always got a takeaway box and were happy to have the leftover cold lunch on those long drives. We found the veggies made a great lunch, along with a scone or two from breakfast.

The waiter always brought a card swipe machine to us, at the table. If you are using cash, then you might have to pay at the bar. I found Dingle to be especially relaxed about "pay whenever"...

Saturday night is definitely "date night". Even so, I'd wear whatever you are wearing to a pub and not worry about it.

Going to a restaurant just for dessert would be odd and would take up a table that full diners could use. Cafés are fine for tea/coffee & cake.
