Railroad travel

Has anyone used the Irish Railroad to tour the country? I thought it might work out but we fly into Shannon and wish to head to either Dublin or Cork. How to get from Shannon to Limmerick which looks to have good service? Thanks.

You will need to do a combination of bus and train. Also, some spots are just easier to get to than others on public transport. Figure out where you really want to go, and then figure out how to get there and how long it will take. Don’t discount the intercity buses. Sometimes they have better options than the train.

Check out bus eireann and citilink buses online. Also look at Irish rail. We used buses, trains, trams, ferries, tour boats, taxis, bicycles and walking to make it around on our recent trip. Others have hired private drivers or taken organized day tours.

If there is a place you really want to go, there is probably a way to get there. It just may take some time and creativity.

Thanks for the insight. Forgot about buses which one sees more often than trains. And, yes, planning destinations is the best beginning.
