Quiet getaway close to Dublin to unwind

Hi everyone,

I'm toying with the idea of taking a couple of days at the end of a 10 day trip around Ireland to unwind before heading home. Are there any quick trips (1 hour or less by public transportation preferably) that would fit the bill? The goal is to unwind, relax, and enjoy the scenery and people before the flight back to the rat race. It would probably be mid-week in mid/late May.

Thanks for all your help,
Carol

I would look to the Dublin suburbs like Howth or Dun Laoghaire. Easy public transportation, great hiking, great scenery and food.

An hour away by bus, for about €10 each way, we stayed in Trim before finishing in Dublin on our last trip. We didn’t go in its massive castle, but it’s great to view, especially lit up at night, if you’re done sightseeing on your trip. Great pubs, too, and a relaxing, wonderful Indian restaurant, too.

For one last sight, if you didn’t already see it on your 10 day trip, the mysterious, prehistoric Newgrange burial tomb, precisely aligned astronomically thousands of years ago, sits in a scenic location. Not too far from Trim, and there might be lots of others seeing it too, but it’s spectacular. Otherwise, just trim off the end of your trip in Trim.

Malahide is also a good option

I would second the recommendation for Howth. My wife and I stayed in a cottage there (through HomeAway) for a week last September (during which we saw Jimmy Buffett at the Olympia!). Beautiful seaside town with great restaurants, easy access to Dublin on the DART. Did a great waling tour with a local guide. I would also recommend another community/suburb on the other end of the DART line, Sandymount. Very peaceful, tranquil location with access to the water, nice pubs and restaurants. I stayed at the Aberdeen Lodge (B&B) and would highly recommend it as well.

Hello from Wisconsin,
Shop along the DART among the Victorian era resort towns. The DART will take you fro well north of Dublin to its far southern reaches, all along the coast.
I am sure there are buses or tours that would take you to either...the Boyne River Valley with New Grange which is to the north or to the south is Glendalough with St.. Kevin's church. A tour going to the Boyne River would be worth it so you got the magnitude of the history in that particular valley. And a Glendalough might include Power's Court gardens. Either would be a comfortable day trip.
