My wife and i will be in Dublin for a week in late September and wonder which area of the city to stay. We use AirBnB and are looking for an area within walking distance of pubs and sights, but not noisy at night. A 20" walk is no problem if we can sleep better.
My husband, son, and I booked an Airbnb in Dublin back in May across the street from St. Patrick's Cathedral. We found it to be within walking distance of everything--even Kilmainham Gaol (though it is a farther walk and we had originally intended to take the HoHo bus). We found the apartment to be pleasant and quiet, but I should add that none of us generally have any problem sleeping if we are tired.

Added bonus--the hosts were wonderful. They had good maps of the city waiting for us and gave us excellent recommendations for places to dine, listen to music, etc. The apartment is also a short walk from an AirLink drop off point.
Sir,
I have an idea. Almost 25 years ago I stayed in the Ballsbridge area of Dublin. It's sometimes known as the Dublin 4 district. I stayed at B&Bs on Landsdowne Road and Pembroke Park road. They were very quiet, especially the one on Pembroke Park. Clyde Road and other streets had a lot of hotels.
The negative is that this area is well out of central Dublin, though that didn't bother me at the time because I was in my 20s with plenty of energy. My B&B on Landsdowne Road wasn't far from a Dublin Area Rapid Transit, or DART, stop. I also got comfortable taking the Dublin bus system.
Enjoy your stay. Cheers.
I just got back Dublin yesterday and stayed in the Financial Centre by the Samuel Beckett Bridge. We did stay at hotel but the area was quiet and within walking distance from everything.
Hi dkgibbons:
I support Craig's suggestion of the Ballsbridge area of Dublin. I was visiting that city during Easter weekend of 2016 when a bazillion visitors decided to show up. Consequently, I didn't have much choice on where to stay. I ended up at the Pembroke Townhouse which was a very nice facility. As Craig says, it is close to a DART station so getting to Central Dublin is not a problem. There is a small business district a few blocks away where I had meals and purchased snacks. My guess is that it is about a 30 minute walk to Central Dublin from here. Ballsbridge is considered to be an upscale neighborhood so you won't find the noisy pubs like those in the Central area. A bit of warning: there is a football stadium in the neighborhood and during my stay there was a Scotland vs Ireland match. Even that was a nice experience: walking with the sports fans past the food trucks. The USA embassy is in the neighborhood which is convenient if you have any passport problems.
Have a good trip.
I stayed at a really nice AirBnB in Dublin. The host was so kind and welcoming, but the space was private. Good location not far from St. Patricks and St. Stephen's Green.
This is the listing: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/3474511. I wholeheartedly recommend staying at Kieran's place!
Noisy at night -- you are wise to ask about that! We stayed at the Harcourt Hotel in Harcourt Street and were barely able to sleep 2 nights in a row from about 1 AM to 5 AM. Noise like you wouldn't believe from inebriated revelers out in the street. And it looks like a quiet residential street in the daytime.
About 2 years ago we stayed on the south side of St. Stephen's Green at Staunton's on the Green. I remember it being very quiet and the breakfast was good. Very pleased with their service. They also offered dinner at their small restaurant Tuesday through Saturday. Took about 20 minutes or so to walk to the Trinity College area.
