where best to leave from? also how long and rough?? knowing that will vary with the weather. I do not do well in rough seas....

As best I can tell, Doolin is where the ferries are.
We took the ferry from Doolin to Inisheer. It's quick but can often be choppy, be prepared with whatever you usually use for seasickness.
The several times I've taken the ferry to the islands over the years, the waters were only mildly choppy. Check the weather conditions, of course, before departing. It's a treat to hear only Irish spoken amongst the residents on these islands. All three are well worth the visit!
If the small size of the Doolin ferries is worrisome, you can also take a much larger ferry with indoor seating to Inishmor from Rossaveel, which is about 30 miles or so west of Galway Town right on the coast.
