Rick talks a lot about traditional music in the pubs, and while I enjoy that, my father isn't as fond, and we will both enjoy decent rock. Since a big part of our trip is going to be hanging out in pubs, drinking beer and listening to live music (preferably), we'll take all the help we can get. We would prefer local acoustic or electric music, not national acts unless they just happen to be playing at a pub. We'll be spending a few days in Kilkenny, Killarney, Dingle and Dublin. And when a place says they have a DJ, should we expect rappy stuff?

At any place with a "DJ" I'd expect no live music at all, just recordings. And yes, I'd assume probably "rappy stuff".
Would be a real shame to miss the "trad" while there. Give it a chance, it's amazing stuff.
Thanks for the confirmation on my suspicions of DJ meaning rap. It was the same in the UK when we were there last summer where live music was likely to be music and DJ likely to be rap. I didn't say we weren't going to listen to any trad. I just said that my father isn't that fond of it, and we'd like some other suggestions.
