My parents visited Ireland in 2012, and my father swears that there were a number of lively pubs in Limerick that he wants to revisit (with a drinking buddy; i.e. me). RS obviously only mentions Limerick in passing and doesn't discuss the area at all otherwise. Does anyone know about the pub culture in Limerick and/or places to stay? I saw that there is about a two-hour train ride, with a change in Limerick Junction, so I should be okay on getting there. Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated!
So you'll be in Dublin, you won't have a car, and you don't plan on touring the 'Wild Atlantic Way'?
I do have some suggestions, if you're still interested...
Yes, we'll be mainly staying in Dublin and then probably taking a train or bus to a smaller town. Suggestions for Limerick, in particular, would be helpful. We're mainly looking to experience Ireland outside of the tourist areas though, so suggestions for other areas as well will be quite welcome.
Your train ride to Limerick will be more like 3-ish hours. Hardly worthy of a 'Day Trip'.
Take the Tram to Malahide and tell him it's the "Limerick" of the East Coast!
I loved Limerick, my picks for pubs are Nancy Blakes (old english bar, located near the milk market), the Locke Bar and Oyster House (check out the up stairs deck, located near the Hunt museum and King John's Castle), the Glen Tavern (great traditional food and drink), Tom and Jerry's next door is a bit odd. Freddy's Bistro (nice wine solution). Lastly though it is a bit of a chain it has some great music, McGettigan's. Have fun in Limerick, the fashion distric has some nice cafes and pubs as well.
We're planning to stay in Limerick for two nights (so that we can be "regulars" the second night). Plus, my father's not an idiot. He would notice we were in a different place.
Thanks so much, Sarah; all of those places sound great and just what we're looking for. I'll definitely put those on my list!
