Pub attire-nightime-Dublin, Belfast and elsewhere

Somewhere in my readings, I encountered an opinion that blue jeans were frowned up in pubs in the evening. If this is so, is it men and women? Just the outlying towns or Belfast and Dublin, too? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Maybe in more of a dance club in Dublin or Belfast.. In the pubs I would think jeans are fine. In the local villages that's all I have seen men wear. Women may dress a bit better. I have always worn jeans and never felt uncomfortable.

Jeff,
IMO, Europe is as casual as the US in pubs, restaurants, etc. We travel to Europe only in the summers and it can be a bit warm - I'm most comfortable in khaki shorts. While on the RS Ireland Tour (June/July), I wore jeans nearly everyday because the weather was cool and often damp. I took jeans to Europe on my first trip in '97 and had not brought them since, that is until I re-visited Ireland early this summer. I find jeans to be heavy, too warm and difficult to dry if washing is needed.
simple answer: wear what you are most comfortable in; if you're a jeans guy - wear'em.

Jeans are perfectly fine in pubs and it's all I wear when I travel because I travel in the Fall.

Seriously, search Google. Type in Dublin Streets or Belfast markets, click on Images and scroll down. You'll see jeans, jeans and jeans on the people in the images.

In Belfast visit The Spaniard pub, and if you get to Kelly's Cellars Tavern don't miss having the BEST seafood chowder next door at Mournes.

In Dublin try the small Sackville Lounge.

Remember two different countries so two different forms of cash. Pounds in NI, Euros in Eire.

Thanks to all. I prefer jeans, will take khakis, too as I won't know for sure where I'll be. Thanks for the food tips. We're all set with two different forms of currency, and, of course, the common denominator-credit and check cards.

Greetings, Jeans are perfectly fine everywhere in Ireland, North and South. Never in my life heard of anyone not wearing jeans in a pub or a nightclub or anywhere else (even Church!)

With lots of family living over in Ireland, I can tell you first hand jeans are completely acceptable to wear in the evenings in pubs. In fact, you tend to blend in a whole lot more in a pair of jeans than a pair of khakis or shorts. This goes for both men and women.

I have also worn, and so have my male relatives and friends, jeans in nightclubs in the larger cities as well (Dublin, Belfast, Galway and Cork) with no issues whatsoever about getting turned away at the door. Granted, the jeans worn to a nightclub tend to be of a darker rinse and a more modern fit (e.g., no "mom jeans" or really baggy fitting jeans). But when these jeans are worn with a nice top, or a jacket and smart looking shoes, it has never been a problem to get past the bouncers.
