PSA for Kilmanhaim Gaol

We will be in Dublin at the end of July. I just booked our tickets for this and there were already quite a few time slots sold out!

It is a must on our list so just though that I would share for those who have it as a must as well!

Thank you for the "heads up". We are planning on the Gaol tour on our upcoming visit, so will make reservations asap to avoid the problem. Thanks again!

Public Service Announcement.. Same as "heads up" or FYI.. may be a Canadian and American saying :). Sorry if I caused confusion :) :)

Hi Sharon:

Thanks for the PSA. The switch to on-line reservations must have been a recent change. I wanted to tour Kilmainham Gaol on March 24 at 3:00 pm and had to wait in line from about 9:30 am to 10:45 am on that day before I got to the ticket desk. It made no difference if you wanted to immediately enter the gaol or come back for a later entry: everyone had to wait in line.

Thanks for the "heads up".

I just booked tickets for our early May visit on line. If not for you we could have missed it, as several time slots on our chosen date were already sold out (as were some other entire days!). The website indicates that it started on-line reservations in early April 2016.

In case anyone is interested, at the website we were able to select our date & time. We were charged $0 because we have the 1 Year Heritage card (we sent away for them a few weeks ago). We printed out our tickets, which we are told to present to be scanned when we reach the site (along with our Heritage cards). Of course there is a lot of other useful info at the website.

Thanks again for the PSA, Sharon!

Thanks for the alert. I just booked for June 14th. Several times taken, but generally still good availability. I also booked the Book of Kells separately for the same day. Still need to decide whether to take a day trip to Belfast or do the Newgrange tour. My three days in Dublin before starting the Basque Country tour are starting to come together.

Big time dittos as well. After reading the posts related to this topic, I got on-line and made reservations for early September. I was quite surprised at the number of slots that were already taken.

Also, thanks to ML for the information about Heritage passes which allowed me to make reservations at no cost--we will have Heritage passes in hand when we go there.

Thank you so much for this info! I will be in Dublin the first week of May so decided to get my tickets online now. Thank goodness I checked... The Gaol will be closed until 2 pm for 3 of the 4 days I'm there, due to it being the 100th anniversary of the actual executions of some of the Easter Uprising leaders. (Closed until 2 pm May 3, 4, 5, 8, 12; these days already sold out for the remaining times.) Fortunately, I was able to find a slot for Friday May 6th. Whew!

I want to make Kilmainham reservations ASAP. I also would like to purchase the Hertitage Island OPW pass in advance, but it seems that I can only snail mail it or fax the application. What mode did you use to obtain your passes? I wanted to just purchase at our first participating site, but this will not help with Gaol reservations. Is there a promo code that you can use just to make the reservations until I have the pass in hand?

Cindy~
We followed the suggestions in the RS book (ours from 2013) to go to the websites. We printed our OPW applications and faxed them along with credit card info. I think the Heritage Island Explorer application was done via their website and paid by Pay Pal (I think credit card was also an option). We received both by snail mail just a week or two later. We were able to reserve our Gaol tour on-line and print out our passes. We were not charged a fee, based on our indication that we would be using the Heritage Card (and we're seniors). We will just need to show our Heritage Cards when we get there. So, if you are getting the OPW Heritage Card, you don't need it when you make your reservations, just when you show up. Hope that helps.

Thank you for the heads up, Sharon! I am planning on being in Dublin in mid-July and just rushed over to the site to book my ticket. Half the slots for July 11th were already gone!

Sharon, visiting Kilmanhaim Gaol is my Aunt's one wish for visiting Ireland! Thank you for the warning. We are trying to book a time on July 20th, but I can't figure out which website to use to order tickets. Can someone please post the website? Thank you all!

Thanks ML,

I mailed our applications a few days ago. Is there a promo code to enter on the website to avoid payment at that time? I can't figure out how to bypass the payment portion of the reservation. I'm try to book for July 6 and the clock is ticking.

Sharon, Thank you for the website. July 20th was already getting filled up. We got a good time slot and printed our tickets from the webssite. All done. My aunt and I thank you for the warning and website! Mary

Hi, Cindy~ Glad to help. As I recall, when I ordered our Gaol tickets on the web we just checked boxes (including that we had the Heritage card) and it came up with our price of 0 Euros. I should mention, if I didn't, that we are seniors so that might have factored in. Good luck!
