Our past few trips have been with a guide/driver and a custom itinerary. We’ve done this in South America, Vietnam and Thailand and, most recently In Portugal and Spain. All of these trips gave us a great deal of time on our own so we didn’t have a driver every day. We had time to explore cities and local sites, but these trips included most of our rooms, some tours and entrance fees to places such as the Guggenheim in Bilbao, food tours and excursions. While a bit expensive, these trips were amazing and well worth the cost. We and friends (2 couples=4 people) hope to explore Ireland & Scotland next May (15 days) and I’ve contacted one company only to find their fees are a minimum €1000 per day without lodging, meals, entrance fees, tours…..just a driver who chats as he takes us between lodging locations. Is this the usual cost/day and does anyone have a recommendation for someone we can work with?
You don't say who you have approached.
You could try Rabbies or Paddywagon. As well as running small group tours both companies will also do bespoke tours for you. There is also My Ireland Tour who are a smaller company based in Cork.
Try approaching these and compare their itineraries, what is included, how responsive they are to your needs and the price quoted.
