Two different bank ATMs, I was not offered the option to make a cash deposit. Is this usual?
Only a minority of machines allow deposits, usually only ones inside banks. It requires a more complicated machine to do deposits.
They only allow customers of that bank to make deposits, into their accounts at that bank.
is that not the same where you live?
Not sure where you are from, but depositing any cash in any random ATM is just not possible even if the machine is set up to accept deposits from the local bank customers.
There are several bank and credit union alliances in the US that will let you deposit at any one of the linked branches ATMs as long as you are an account holder at one of them. But you still can't make a deposit in your Wells Fargo account from a Bank of America or Chase ATM. They are just not linked up that way.
Also, I have seen in many of my European visits that the machine at a Bank that takes deposits is often not an ATM but a dedicated machine just for deposits. And no, you can't use one of them to make a deposit unless you have an account there.
Thanks everyone for your prompt replies. I'm sorry to be such a newb. I haven't been inside a bank in twenty years. I chose my bank because the branch was near my home. I make deposits there all the time. If I need cash, I just get it by taking $20 over at the grocery store.
In short, the ATM is my bank and the ATM is just like a teller.
I guess my surprise stems from the fact that the ATM seemed to have no difficulty in linking to my bank in order to give ME money. I guess I was naive to think that the link would be more difficult if I wanted to give THEM money.
In any case, no harm - no foul. I can think of something to buy or just eat the exchange fee.
Happy travels.
