Points of Interest Between Galway and Dublin

Hi all,

I have an extra day to fill between my time in Galway and when I need to be in Dublin. I'll be driving, and rather than taking a straight shot over, I am looking for suggestions on interesting places to stop between the two in order to break the drive into two days.

Thank you,
Robert

Hi Robert, the answer to your question is to explore Athlone with the vast Shannon river and it's cruises, you also have Athlone castle and the world's oldest pub, Sean's bar.
And the amazing and vast early Christian burial ground of Clonmacnoise is only 20 min's from Athlone.
And the kicker is that Athlone is exactly the hakfwy point from Dublin to Galway.

Thank you, Éamonn. This is exactly the sort of information I was looking for.

Best,
Robert

I'm doing similar. For me it's a stop (probably a couple of hours) at Clonmacnoise plus a brief stop at nearby Clonfert Cathedral. I'm planning to continue on. I need to be close to Dublin to drop my girlfriend at the airport the next morning.

Our stop-over on the day we drove Galway/Dublin was Irish National Stud, the government-owned thoroughbred breeding facility and gardens near Kildare. https://irishnationalstud.ie/

Interesting tour and some self-guided things to see, as well as the horses, of course.

(That said, chapvip818 has me wondering if we made a mistake not visiting Athlone.)
