Hello! We will be in Dublin, and want to travel to Dingle, then back to Dublin. We would like to take a train out of Dublin to a smaller town, rent a car, then drive to Dingle. For the way back, we would drive to whatever town we rented the car in, drop the car, and take the train back to Dublin to the airport. The reason for this is we don't want to drive in any bigger towns like Dublin. This is our first trip to Great Britian, and driving on the other side of the road. We want to be careful our first time! Does anyone know what would be a good town to rent the car in, and drive on to Dingle? We have considered Kilkenny. We are hoping to avoid large cities, and we would like to be able to do some sightseeing on the way to Dingle, and on the way back. Thank you so much for any help provided!
You could take RyanAir to Kerry Airport and rent there. Limerick and Tralee both have train stations and rental cars.
Hi Andrea...I sent you a PM, but it looks like it didn't take. Hopefully you got it!

The downside of renting a car somewhere other than Dublin is that you're less likely to find a car with automatic transmission, and your initial driving will be on city streets and rural roads. Personally, I'd rent a car with automatic transmission in Dublin, ideally at the airport. You'll have a relatively easy time adjusting to driving on the left if your first couple of hours is spent on the motorway from Dublin to, say, Limerick. This approach worked well for me, at any rate.
Hello,
My wife and I just returned from a trip to Ireland. We rented our car at Dublin airport, drove to Doolin- 4 nights- then to Kenmare-3 nights then Dingle-3 nights. We then drove from Dingle to Trim, where we spent our last 3 nights. We've done this before- with our last night in Trim leaving an easy drive to the Dublin airport the day we leave. You don't really get into Dublin on this route to the airport. It's congested as you get closer to the airport but with GPS and allowing enough time, you can do it! We missed one turn but with the roundabouts, you can just go around again until you get it right!
Another option, if you can book your flight to Shannon, it's an easy airport to get into and out of and then a couple of hours to Dingle. But you've no doubt already made your flight arrangements.
Actually, the rural Irish roads might be more of a challenge than the busy cities!
Good luck and have fun
