Hello husband and son are planning a golf trip flying into Shannon Airport from NY, sometime in September.
Will probably stay in County Clare. .Any airline preference?
Any recommendations for places to stay? Golf courses to play at? What time in September is best to travel there?
Any other info would be appreciated!
Thank you in advance
This september? I'll just say, we are staying in Doolin a couple nights this September(2026). We wanted to stay three nights but huge problem finding a place, because the Amgen Irish Open is taking place. If they are talking about this year, they better start looking months ago. The course for the Irish Open is Trump International, and boy, I'd love to say more. . . .
We stayed in Lahinch, a lovely little seaside town with a world-class golf course. Doonbeg is just down the road to the south.
Just recently finished the RS “Heart of Ireland” tour which started in Ennis, only about 20-30 minutes from Shannon Airport. Lodging was the Old Ground Hotel and we found it very nice. Friendly staff, huge room (and not an upgraded one!). Not too pricey (we paid 240 euros for an extra pre-tour night there, breakfast included). The town was pleasant but not a lot to see there. Ennis has a golf course, but I didn’t see it.
We passed the course at Lahinch, and they may not want to play it unless they are bald (or have a high tolerance for frustration), because they will be tearing their hair out! 😉 It is a true “links” course built on sand dunes next to a bay; the part I saw from the road had barely a flat surface on it. If they love a challenge, that would be it.
Try the Fisherman's Rest B&B right in the heart of Doolin. We've stayed there several times over the years. It has four guest rooms and the lovliest breakfast room of any I've seen in Ireland. Convivial host Danny will entertain you with stories and good cheer, as will Toby the Olympic hammer throwing dog, though in a non-verbal way. Danny will explain.

There's a pitch and putt links course in Doolin. The Lahinch and Spanish Point courses are a short distance south.
