Hi, We will be staying in Kilkenny for 5 to 7 days.
We will have a car. Where should we travel to for day trips from Kilkenny?
And any suggestions while in Kilkenny are welcome too. Thank you.
I don't know how much research you have done or what places you may have on your list yet... I assume you have already found and used the Kilkenny website?
What sort of ideas are you looking for and what sort of things do you like doing/seeing? Museums, castles (ruined or lived in) cathedrals, churches, art galleries, arts and craft workshops, shopping, pubs and music, walking.... the list is endless.
There's lots to do and see in Kilkenny - have a look here for ideas and I'll leave you to decide. (Things I like may not be things you do!) There is also Kell's Priory about 10 miles south of Kilkenny and St. Mary's Church in Gowran, just over 8 miles to the east.
Day trips
If you haven't already been to Glendalough in the Wicklow mountains, that is well worth adding to the list. As well as the early Christian ruins there are plenty of walks there too. Lots of ideas here. Powerscourt Gardens are also popular and there are plenty of other things to do and see in the Wicklow Mountains too - Sally's Gap and Glenmacnass Waterfall could easily be included in the day.
Rock of Cashel is a popular day trip - Cashel itself is an attractive settlement. If you are intersted in Folk history, there is the Cashel Folk Village. Hore Abbey near by too.
There is also Cahir, an attractive small town with its ruined castle.
Alternatively there is Waterford which is bigger and home of Waterford Crystal. Have a look here for ideas. There is the Copper Coast, an UNESCO Global Geopark, once the site of copper mining but with dramatic coastal scenery and yet to be discovered by the tourists.
The Rive Gauche (Left Bank) restaurant, across from the castle, was very good.
