My neighbors are going to Ireland next month, most of the time in Dublin area and a side trip to Galway.. When I was there years ago there was no problem with pickpockets. Has anything changed? If it is starting to be a problem, I'll give them my unused money belt.
As always, thanks.
Pickpocketing in Ireland does not raise to the level that you might find in Rome or Barcelona but it is always a possibility and using a money belt is just smart travel.
Thanks Frank.
I’m a short middle aged woman who wandered around Dublin all by myself, got cash out of the ATM and never felt threatened or uncomfortable. They should use the same common sense they would use in any urban area.
Don't loose sight of the other function of money belts in that they prevent against accidentally loosing valuables. Probably a bigger threat than pickpockets, but the consequences are the same you would wast a couple days cancelling credit card, replacing passport, and arranging replacement cash.
Also Dublin does have a lot of heroin issues, there are junkies around desperate for cash so purse snatching is more of an issue than pickpockets. I witnessed one in the middle of Grafton st. in broad daylight.
Thanks everyone. I just got home from Italy and wore a neck wallet the whole time. My neighbors have not travelled except to Hawaii quite often. Their daughter lives in Dublin so they are going to visit her. I’ll let them decide if they want my money belt. The precaution can’t hurt.
@horsewoofie—your back! Hope your trip was awesome! Trip report?
Hi diveloonie and everyone. Yes i’m back but came home very sick with the worse cold imaginable. A week later and I haven’t even unpacked. I’ll work on my trip report soon I promise. It was the best trip. Every moment was a “wow.”
I was in Dublin in May, there are certainly dodgy areas that coincide with some tourist centers (e.g. Post Office). I noticed people falling down drunk but was told it may have been heroin abuse rather than alcohol. Other people we met said they were staying within a couple blocks of an area with noticeable levels of meth abusers.
Dublin doesn't have the same level of pick pockets you might see in other major cities but I wouldn't discount issues with theft.
I kept my stuff in a neck wallet. My girlfriend carried about $150 cash in her pocket and lost it within ten minutes at St. Stephens Green. It may have fallen out or she may have had it stolen, sometimes it's hard to know which? We looked around but didn't find anything.
In 30 days and many a drunken night I never lost my wallet or pocketwatch. Ireland is not Barcelona.
