Phoning the US from Ireland and Scotland

Can anyone offer a suggestion for the best way to phone the US from Ireland? I do not have a smartphone. Someone suggested purchasing a phone at Tesco and the cost for calling the US was two cents per minute. Anyone with recent experience? Thank you.

I do not have a smartphone either, just a Nokia flip phone I got in 2010, but it has the right bands to be used in Europe on our regular AT&T plan ( $1.00 or so a minute). You might check your phone type and rates with your provider before you invest in Tesco phone. Will the samemonenwork from both Scotland and Ireland?

I bought the cheapest phone at Tesco which was $14.99 euros and bought a prepaid phone and $10 euros prepaid - it can be used all over Europe too so can use it when I travel to other European countries. You can add money online too

I normally use skype but you need wifi for that and it's nice to have just in case

Do you plan to make a lot of calls or just one - two calls? If it is the latter, you could buy a few hundred minutes on a phone card and dial from your hotel telephone. Just double check if the hotel will charge for the use of the phone. Some do; some don't.

When I was in Ireland a year ago at this time, I bought a prepaid international calling card at a convenience store in Dublin. I bought a €10 one, and it was good for something like 200 minutes if calling a USA number. What a deal!

The card was fairly easy to use and I didn't have any problems with it. I didn't use up all of its minutes, so I'm bringing it with me when I visit Ireland again next week. From what I understand, its minutes don't expire, so I assume I'll be able to use it for my upcoming trip.

Forgot to mention in my previous post that the calling card I purchased in Dublin has a toll-free number for accessing it to call, say, the USA, so I didn't have to pay any hotel or B&B surcharges for telephone use, and the card also worked like a charm with pay phones.
