Many people believe personal liability is covered if they use a credit card to rent a car. After reading my Guide to Benefits with my major credit card I was surprised personal liability not covered. I tried several other credit card companies and it is the same. With that being said, how have you protected yourself in the case of an accident while driving the rental car? Collision is covered and we hopefully all have the CDW or Collision damage waiver. But again the CDW does NOT cover personal liability.
We carry a million dollar personal liability rider on our homeowners policy to cover all liability.
Very skeptical of this since my homeowners is with a major insurance company and does not cover trips abroad.
It is a rider to the base policy. And it covers ALL liability anywhere, anytime. Then we reduce our car insurance liability to state required min. In the end we have more coverage for less money. Before retiring the policy was actually five million since my occupation and public service exposed me to more liability.
we have an umbrella coverage...one that sounds like Frank's. I emailed our agent to see if any personality liability incurred while traveling out of the country would be covered.
UPDATE: Our agent says- The excess $1,000,000 of Umbrella coverage over your home’s $1,000,000 liability would provide you with personal liability anywhere in the world.
So perhaps double check with your insurance agent. This umbrella policy we have costs $85/year.
I've never rented in Ireland, but in every other European country I've rented in, liability insurance is included with the car rental whether I want it or not.
Thank you...
