Flying from UK to Dublin on a US passport. What can I expect at passport control? What do they typically ask or want to see?
You will probably see a line and they want to see your passport. Length of line depends….and they will probably ask why you are there or how long you’re staying, it varies.
My experience may have been atypical, but my wife was through just as fast with her US passport as I was with an Irish one. Very short line, and just "how long are you staying?" and "welcome to Ireland."
Sometimes it's a question or two, sometimes it's grilling.
You may not go through any passport control. Ireland and the UK share a common travel area, so typically, there is no immigration process.
However, one time flying into Dublin from Leeds, I did need to go through Irish Immigration (not sure what was different with that flight, Non-UK/Irish passport holders were routed to immigration)
In my experience, most immigration questions are the same: How long are you staying, where are you going, where are you staying tonight, What is the purpose of your visit, etc.

If you hold an American passport, you will have to go through immigration when traveling from the UK to Ireland. Only British and Irish subjects are exempt from immigration. (I have done this a few times.)
However, there is no immigration from Ireland to the UK.
We were just traveled to Dublin from the US on US passports in February and the passport control line moved fast. They asked how long we were in Ireland for and if this was our first time visiting. They waved us through quickly. Took maybe 5 minutes total time.
The biggest factor for how long it takes is where your seat is and whether you can hustle (without being rude) to get near the front of the lump of people coming off your flight. Arrivals are very uneven, and even if you're first out of the plane, another flight may have arrived just before yours. I experienced no line at all and as long as 15 minutes.
