Packing Advice

Planning a 10-day first-time tour of Ireland (along with a family wedding) in a few weeks and I'm beginning to organize my packing. Besides the obvious (camera, rain jackets, sneakers, etc), what must-have items should we bring?

We just came back from a 16-day trip to Ireland.

Make sure you pack some sunscreen even though it may rain/cloudy you can still get a bad sunburn. I would also pack a light fleece as its seasonably cold in Ireland right now.

I would really try to find waterproof shoes if you can, it can get really wet in Ireland on some days.

Finally, on our Plane ride they gave us some eye shades, may want to hold on to them, because its still rather bright daylight at 10pm in Ireland. It also gets bright around 5am as well so if your not used to that amount of light coming into your room it can be an adjustment.

Have fun!

I am not sure if you are referring to must-have items in general or must-have items for Ireland. If a general question of packing go here: link If asking specifically about Ireland, definitely some rain protection. During my trip to Ireland and England it rained quite frequently, although mostly they were showers for only a few minutes. We did have 1 or 2 days of mostly rain when in Dublin.

Thanks for the suggestions (especially the sunblock!). Yes, I did mean specifically packing for Ireland...not sure if we can get waterproof shoes, but was definitely going to bring two pairs of walking shoes so one could dry out while the others are worn in case of nasty weather. Fingers crossed for blue skies!

Nik-wax to waterproof your leather shoes. Beats buying (and breaking in) new shoes for everybody.

I find as I travel that I bring less and less each time -- I always seem to wear the same couple of outfits over and over anyway. Throw in something dressier for a nice restaurant if you like, but I have never felt out of place in jeans and a sweater in Ireland. It is much more relaxed, fashion wise, than say, France. A change of shoes is excellent advice, and of course rain gear. I would tend to favor leather shoes over sneakers, as you will blend in with the locals more, but comfort is the top priority. Have fun! I wish I were going again soon.
