My wife and I are ending our Ireland trip in Doolin( after staying on Aran Island) and driving east bk to Dublin with time for one more overnight betw Doolin and Dublin. Any recommendations?

Athlone would make for a pleasant enroute stop. It's a pretty little town with a well preserved medieval castle, and about 30 minutes to the south are the monastic ruins of Clonmacnoise - in some ways are even more evocative than those at Glendalough thanks to its location right on the river Shannon.
From there it's about 1.5 hrs. by car to Dublin airport for your car return.
