Overnight on the Ring of Kerry

Greetings everyone! First off, thank you to everyone who commented on my first post regarding my plans. I am starting to narrow down my plans and I have a question which I have not seen addressed here.

Originally, we were planning on driving from Kinsale to Kenmare in one day. Visiting the Muckross house, enjoying the National Forest, touring the Kissane Sheep farm and ending our day for a one night stay in Kenmare. The next morning we would drive the ROK (per RS suggestions) and end our day in Dingle for a 3 night stay.

Now I am thinking of driving from Kinsale to Killarney and spending the night. To fill the day we would visit Muckross house that day or possibly drive over to the Gap of dunloe and hike it a bit. I understand that you can easily access some trails into the National Forest from Killarney so we might take a stroll or possibly rent some bikes...if they rent bikes. The next morning we would visit the Muckross House if we did not do it the day before, maybe take some short hikes while in the National Forest and if we time it right visit the Kissane Sheep Farm. According to the RS book the tours are in the afternoon and there has to be a minimum of 15 people. I am not going to let the Sheep Farm dictate my day but if it works out I would like to take a tour. Then we would continue down the ROK and over night in Sneem or Caherdaniel. My concern with this is I don't want to travel with the tour buses that are probably going to be leaving from Killarney. I am sure if we get ahead or behind them (far enough behind them) it might work.

Has anyone done this overnighting on the Rok? After spending the night we should be able to easily get ahead of the buses the next morning for the rest of the drive and back it into Dingle.

And just a thought here if anyone from RS is reading this. I think it would be helpful if Rick included recommended times at sites. I know it is subjective but it would better help people who are planning their time. Just a thought!

We did not spend night in Sneem but it looked to be a pleasant little town. In addition to the sheep farm that you mentioned there is a dog/sheep herding show that you may enjoy--sorry but I cannot remember the name but it would probably be easy to find out from a local. We drove part way on Beara and it is gorgeous--more so than ROK.

Thank you both for your replies! I think my problem is now that every time I research another sight I keep adding things to my "do list." LOL...looks like we may never return from Ireland! Thank you again!

I've spent the last 2 years over-nighting on the Ring of Kerry!!

I was in Sneem a few days ago for the Writing Club - it's a lovely little village with a river running through the center - very picturesque and nice places to stay. Good pubs for food, and a nice selection of cafes & bakeries.

Caherdaniel is lovely, and you're very close to Derrynane there - one of the top 10 beaches in Ireland. Really interesting and beautiful terrain, not just "a beach." There would be less choices for a place to stay than Sneem - it's VERY small, there. If you do stay there, The Blind Piper in Caherdaniel has wonderful tradition music sessions on Thursday nights!

Waterville has three hotels, now - from very basic and modest to a high end boutique hotel (new). Also lots of pub & eating choices. It's the only sea front village on the Ring of Kerry - and it has Lough Currane about a 5 minute walk from downtown - where the largest salmon and largest trout were both caught. There's also a great beach walk offered from SeaSynergy, there. Wandering the beach and exploring tidepools is a nice break from the car.

I've posted a lot of photos on a new album to show some areas of the Ring of Kerry - so many people seem to think that the "organized drive" IS the ROK - but there are so many more views and forts and experiences than make the guidebooks.

Staigue Fort is nice, but Loher Fort and Caherdanlel Fort are also pretty darn good! Just not as well promoted in the guidebooks (hence, every time I've been to these, no one else has been there). Loher Fort offers great views of Ballinskelligs Bay, too.

If you do the extra bit on the Skellig Loop, you do go to Port Magee as someone above mentioned. That and Valentia Island are really a beautiful addition to the RoK drive. The view from the top of Valentia Island is amazing!
