Overnight in Dublin

We are looking to plan a trip to Scotland to visit family. The flight we are looking at on the way home has us staying overnight in Dublin (26 hour layover, arriving at 1pm and leaving at 2pm the following day). What economy lodging would you recommend that is near the airport? And if we caught the bus to City Center, what would be some must-see/dos during our short time there? Thanks!

Must-sees are dependent on your interests, but here’s what we did with approximately the same amount of time (group of 4 friends): taxied to hotel to drop suitcases (just about as cheap as the bus for 4); walked to the Long Room at Trinity College (this was a must for one of us and had reservations); walked to Christ Church Cathedral for 6:00 evensong; walked to the Arlington Hotel for dinner and (tourist) show (had reservations - food was good and show was casual fun); walked back to hotel about 10:30. We stayed at the Castle Hotel, which was convenient, relatively inexpensive, fine (not fancy) and had a nice breakfast. Our flight left the next day in the morning so that was all the time we had.

There are other great things to do - we just had to pick for a very short time and balance interests.

Thank you, TravelMom, for your tips! It's helpful to see what someone else has done in that time-frame.

We stayed at the Premier Inn at Swords, just a few minutes from the airport the night before our flight out and were pleased. We took a taxi there and the shuttle back. Depending on the time of year of your visit, Riverdance performance is fun. Dublin Castle was more interesting than I expected and Book of Kells was a major disappointment. Don’t take time for it.

If you are flying back to the United States you will have to go through customs at the Dublin Airport. So make sure that you arrive at the airport at least 3 hrs before your flight leaves.

The night before our flight to US from Dublin we stayed at the Holiday Inn Express at Dublin airport. The rate was reasonable, and we used their reliable shuttle. There's a somewhat pricier H.I. Crowne Plaza next door. (The shared shuttle stops there.)
