Overnight in Cashel?

Has anyone out there stayed overnight in Cashel? Was it worth it? Also has anyone gone there by bus from Kilkenny? I was planning on going from Kilkenny to Cashel but it takes 3.5 hours and 3 buses. I'm wondering if I should just do it as a day trip from Dublin instead (1 bus, 2 hours).

I've had experiences with touristy places where I stayed overnight and was glad I did. One was Portmeirion, Wales and the other was Le Mont St Michel in France. Both places were overrun with tourists during the day and nearly empty (and wonderful) at 5PM. Is this how Rock of Cashel is?

We found Cashel to be busy but not overcrowded. That was August 2016.
The Rock draws a crowd but it was not crazy at all. We wandered down the hill to Hoare Abbey and had it to ourselves.
We had a nice lunch and a pleasant wander around town.
We were staying at a mate's in Tipp. so had no need to stay but I reckon it would be worth it.

We stayed at the Ashmore House in Cashel as a last minute thing. It is a nice b&b, if you decide to stay over.

My husband and I took my in-laws to Ireland last summer. Renting a car in Dublin to drive to Galway, our first overnight was Cashel. We stayed at a B&B called Palm Grove B&B that we found on booking.com, run by a very lovely older lady. The Rock itself didn’t seem too overrun with tourists, and the town was fairly quiet in the evening. We enjoyed a delicious seafood pie dinner for tuppence and went back to the same bar/restaurant later in the evening for a few pints.

That said, if you don’t mind the long bus rides, we found both Kilkenny and Cashel doable in the same day.
