Overnight btw Dublin and Belfast - Carlingford/Royal HIllsborough? (New Grange & Leprechauns)

I've planned itinerary with a first night stop in RHillsborough, but am second guessing.

I'd like some time in a smaller town -- somewhere like dingle would be ideal but the geography is working against us. Carlingford was suggested as alternate. It seems like almost exactly splits the difference in driving time (only slightly off track). RHillsborough seems like there's not much and I know we won't tour the Royal household, also not there best time of year for gardens.

Is Carlingford worth to for a few hours exploring/meal? I see a few attractions and the hotel price is right. Ideally, we will stop at new grange on way, but since I can't book til 30 days out its not definite.

Any one done the Leprechaun whisperer? We are traveling with our four children, but the are all older teens/early 20s. They've outgrown surly and may give themselves over to the fun of this experience.

Carlingford is a definite possibility with its ruined castle and water front.

I've not heard of the Leprechaun whisperer but it gets consistently good reviews on Trip Advisor.

Carlingford is a popular with stag and hen dos on the weekend, so I would not stay there on a Friday or Saturday night. We were there on either a Sunday or a Monday, just for one night, on our way up to Bushmills. It was a lovely town. We had very adequate meals and a nice walk around. Lovely views. I'd recommend it.

ugh. I sort of got the bachelorette party vibe from the visit Carlingford site.

We are traveling in December, but yes on a Saturday.

Perhaps that's off season for weddings?
