Is The Rock of Cashel and Cahir Castle worth going a little out of the way for? Trying to narrow down our 10 day itinerary.
I would definitely make the stop at the Rock of Cashel, it's quite a dramatic, and old, place with great views of the area. I didn't get to Cahir Castle, but those who have enjoyed it. I guess it depends on your route, and how much time you have. I think I spent a couple of hours at Cashel, but I had done quite a trek by train and bus to get there so I took my time. You could probably get away with a shorter visit of about an hour.
How far out of the way?
We missed closing time for the Rock of Cashel by 10 minutes but decided not to go the next day. Just took night photos from below. We went to Hore Abbey ruin just below the hill. We went to Cahir Castle the next day and it's nice. It kind of depends on what other sights you have planned and how much time you have to "go out of the way ". Prioritizing can get frustrating :D
The Rock of Cashel is definitely worth a diversion. I enjoyed Cahir Castle, but would not consider it worth a significant detour on its own. We also stopped at Michelstown Cave immediately after, and together they were a worthwhile detour.
