One day in Dublin

We have never been to Dublin before and we will soon be in Dublin for one day from 8 until 5 (on a cruise ship) the first week of October. I wanted to see as much as possible of the city and countryside. Also was wondering what to expect in the way of weather and possible fall colors at this time. Any advice for the best sights and experiences ?
Thanks

I suggest you start with a hop-on, hop-off bus tour. You can start at any of their stops and take the whole trip around (about 90 minutes) to hear the commentary and get an overview of the city, then get off wherever your interests take you. The city center is very walkable and you can see a lot in a short time in the Trinity College/Temple Bar/Grafton St area. It could be rainy - or not. St Stephens Green, at one end of Grafton St, would be the most likely spot to see any fall colors, unless you travel a distance out to Phoenix Park.

St Stephens and Phoenix parks will have some fall colors. Don't waste valuable time at the Guinness Storehouse. Love the nectar of the Gods but MUCH more to see in Dublin especially with your limited amount of time. Personally, I'd visit the Book of Kells at Trinity College first thing, Kilmainham Gaol, walk around Temple Bar and a photo op on Hey Penny bridge, then find your way via public transit to this wonderful cafe, Foodgame on South Lotts Road on your way back to your cruise ship.

For us, the tour of Kilmainham Gaol was the highlight in Dublin, it's a fantastic lesson in some key Irish history, worth a couple of hours. Note that if you want to do the tour it is advised to be a bit early, the tour when we did it was at 9:30. In a close second were the Archeological and Natural History Museums, with a great walk around Saint Stephens Green afterwards.

I think the advice here is good. It is true that the Dublin center is relatively small and walkable. The History Museum is also worth a visit if you have time. With only 8 hours I don't think you will have time to do any countryside stuff though.
