Non-alcohol drinks in the Ireland pubs? What do I ask for? Will locals understand?

Friends,

I am not able to drink alcoholic drinks because they trigger migraine headaches, and my wife does not drink. My family is planning a two-week trip throughout Ireland, and we plan to frequent the pubs each day... for lunch and enjoy trad music each evening. We love experiencing life with the locals, and interacting with them.

Are there non-alcoholic drink options available in the pubs? We want to have fun and interact in the pubs, and we wondered what to ask for! I hope the locals will understand.

What should we ask for? I'd appreciate your thoughts on this...

Thanks, Ron

You will find plenty of non alcoholic beverages to choose from including colas and juices. Plenty of folks won't be drinking alcohol. Have a great trip!

My husband and I went to Ireland 2 years ago and the pubs were our favorite night time activities! The music and the friendly people were the best!

You can absolutely drink non- alcoholic drinks. No problem! Just ask for whatever you might want to drink! Soft drinks and water, I don’t think they would make you a pumpkin spice latte, ha! But make sure to get out and enjoy the pubs, the music and dancing might bring you to tears- in a good way! I hope that you enjoy your trip!

No one is really going to care what you choose to drink. Suggest maybe asking the bartender or other patrons for their suggestions ... might stumble upon a totally unexpected local specialty, and the question may very likely place you in the center of a lively discussion among the locals.

Locals don't care what you drink. There have always been many people in the pubs not having alcohol when I have been there. Order what you would at a bar or restaurant near your house -- various carbonated drinks, juices, water, coffee (just brewed, no fancy StarBucks style). After all, they allow children in who cannot have alcohol so there has to be something for them to drink.

Agree with all the previous posters. Just returned from the RS Best of Ireland tour. We attended many music sessions. My drink of choice was sparkling water, or a cola.

When you walk into any pub, take a peek over the bar. You'll usually see a cold case with bottled beer and a variety of sodas. You may also see all the mixers (tonic, ginger ale, etc.) on a shelf. Plenty of non-alcoholic beverages from which to choose. Every pub also has a tub of ice on the back bar, so if you'd like ice, ask for it and you'll usually get it in a tall glass. Enjoy your drinks and the music.

It probably worth pointing out that in Ireland pubs make more on soft drinks than on alcohol.

They also have non alcoholic beer in most pubs if that interests you. Hubby doesn’t drink but enjoyed the beer!

Also, hubby chose to not drink anything while we were at a pub listening to music ( we had already eaten, drank, and were full). I had a drink, but he offered the owner 10 Euro since he was sitting there and not spending money. The owner refused to take it. He smiled, and waved his hand and said no, it’s fine! We thought that was very nice!

A small tip about pub etiquette: In most places the customer orders at the bar and carries the drink. No table service unless food is involved. Coffee might count as food A server handling a meal might fetch the second round of drinks. And the locals don't tip unless there has been special service and that's still a 'maybe'.
