neighborhood in which to stay in Dublin

I will be spending six days in Dublin at the end of March. I have made reservations at two hotels in two very different neighborhoods and am deciding which reservation to cancel. One reservation is at the Pembroke Townhouse in the Ballsbridge neighborhood and the other is the Trinity City Hotel located on Pearse across the street from Trinity College. Trinity City Hotel costs about $40 - $50 per night more than Pembroke. While I like its proximity to Dublin's night life and some of the sites I will be visiting I am wondering if the street is noisy at night. What happens when all of pubs close, for example. In Seattle a comparable neighborhood is Belltown which is not, in my opinion, a good place to be when all of the semi-drunks walk up and down the street. My issue with Pembroke is that it might be too quiet for me - I would like some restaurants nearby, and that it is somewhat far away from the sites/sights of central Dublin. Is the commuter train a good means to get to central Dublin which will be my jumping off point for the rest of the city? Is the walk from central Dublin to Ballsbridge safe? (ie, my guidebooks says that north of the river is sketchy at night so how about this neighborhood? I would not expect any problems here based on the description of the neighborhood but might there be areas to avoid?).

Thanks for your input.

We stayed in the Ballsbridge area on our first visit to Dublin many years ago. It's an upscale neighborhood (many embassies there) and indeed it is very quiet - I don't recall much in the way of nightlife. The walk into the city center (St Stephens Green) is probably about 20-25 minutes and seemed to be safe enough at all hours...along streets that seemed to be nearly deserted in the evening. Not sure how close the nearest DART station is from the Pembroke...might be a little out of the way to make it convenient.
You'd be several blocks from the Temple Bar area if you stayed at the Trinity City Hotel - close enough for a short stroll but far enough away to still be relatively quiet. Would think that might be your better choice if you really want to be in the center of things, and a pair of soft ear plugs would be good insurance just in case.

If you choose the Trinity City Hotel you will be in the heart of everthing that is fun to see and experience in Dublin. The traffic noise was not a factor for me, I don't ever remember hearing anything after 9:00 pm and while sleeping. Be sure to sign up for the Literary Pub Crawl, it is a evening that will a highlight of your trip to Ireland. Go through the Temple Bar area so you can say you did but my favorite pub was O'Neils, great beer , food and fellowship with the locals. Ireland is wonderful, you might take a daytrip to New Grange and see the prehistoric sights. Have fun!

I stayed at the Trinity City Hotel and it was a nice hotel, good sized room and nice amenities. The only noise I had an issue with was the courtyard of the actual hotel - there was a party or something going on - otherwise didn't hear any street noise. It was a great location and could walk to many areas of Dublin.
