Need help for our last 3 days

Hello everyone. We are coming to Ireland for St. Patrick's Day this year. We arrive at 5:15am on 15 March. We will be spending 3 nights in Dublin. We have 3 more nights that we need to plan before returning for a flight out of Dublin at 4:25pm on 21 March.

We know we want to see the Ring of Kerry, but that is about as far as we have gotten. We were thinking of doing Galway, Kilkenney and Cork. Does this sound good for 3 nights? Should we skip any of those?

Also, would it be better to spend the 3 nights in one central place or drive to a new place every night. Any suggestions would be appreciated as planning can be a little overwhelming!

Thank you

For only 3 nights, a single home base makes more sense, probably at Kenmare, to be close to the Ring of Kerry, Dingle peninsula, and nearby options. You could stop at Kilkenny or Cashel on your driving day to get there. You really don't have time to add Cork or Galway. Start penciling in options on a calendar to see how it fits. Rick's guidebook summarizes drive times, or Google Maps will give you a starting point, but you have to add time for stops, traffic, etc. Even a direct train across the country takes half a day, e.g. 4 hours direct from Dublin to Galway.

Are you really saying that you're going all the way to Ireland and you only have 3 full days to spend there, then you're flying back home?

In any case, based on what you've said, I don't think you have time to pick up and go anywhere. Stick to day trips from your base (presumably Dublin). I don't think you have enough time to get to the opposite end of the country (eg Rink of Kerry, which is about as far from Dublin as you can get and still be in Ireland).

Thank you both

We have 6 nights in Ireland. We are spending 3 of them in Dublin and areas around there. Asking for advice on the other 3 nights.

Does anyone have opinions on the Cliffs of Moher vs the Cliffs of Kilkee? I read that the Cliffs or Kilkee are much less crowded, but is this area as scenic?

Hi I don’t have too much to add as I have not been to Ireland yet. We are going there in march and will also be in Dublin for st patty’s Day.
My only 2cents would be from other travel experiences I’m not big on one night stops. Though it may work for others and it seems to be popular on a ireland rd trip.
I know you want to see the ring of Kerry, same here but unfortunately the plan now is it’s going to wait till another trip (doing Dingle instead). But on a short trip maybe it would be easier to train to Galway. There you would have access to Aran islands, the burren and cliff Moher and county Connemara. Which according to rick can be easily done without a car rental. But take this info with a grain of salt as this is just reasearch not experience.
Hopefully other can be more helpful!
But hey maybe I’ll see ya in Dublin lol

Just do Kerry and Dingle from a central location. I wouldn't stay in Kenmare, though. It was awful, like a Disney version of Ireland.

As Laura mentioned, the travel time to get from Dublin down to the Killarney, Ring of Kerry or Dingle area is several hours either by train or car. So, you will waste half a day just getting there, and then you have to return to Dublin to fly home so you will have to do it again. In the end I think for your short stay you would be better off just splitting your time between Dublin and Galway. Galway is just a couple of hours by train, and it is close to Cliffs of Moher/Burren, Connemara, and Inishmore. You could probably do without a car and make use of guided day trips.

Cliffs of Moher are beautiful but tourist overrun ..... tacky gift shops in a mini strip mall on its landward side.....tour buses etc ....uggh. They are gorgeous but for us hard to fully enjoy. Kilkee we loved.....but if you are on the ROK.....go see the Cliffs of Kerry, wild, windswept, no tourist hoards, incredible sights and its right there......no need to drive all over Ireland. I'd pick one spot.....maybe Castlemaine area.....and you'll have EASY access to Dingle and Slea Head, the ROK, and the sights near Killarney (skip that town itself TOURIST overrun)......and enjoy that area. Trying more is incredibly self defeating.

If you can I'd trim Dublin nights down.....it's okay but can't compare to the countryside.....but if you want to split ......Just pick one good central spot and explore in that area. You can't see Ireland in three days, even trying is pointless. Avoid rushing around and enjoy the magic in that small area. You could spend weeks in that area and not exhaust it and experience the magic.

That looks like a tight schedule. Unless this is definitely the only trip to Ireland you're ever going to make, going all the way over to the west seems a stretch. Have you looked into the Trim area? Nice town in lovely County Meath, [we stayed at a fabulous B&B a 2 minute walk from the "Braveheart" castle] it's near the attractions at the Hill of Tara, Newgrange, Knowth, etc and a short drive northwest from Dublin.
