Need advice

Hi everyone. Flying in and out of Ireland quickly for a wedding. There are some things planned for the trip already in Dublin, Waterford and a few stops in between, but there's a day after the wedding in Waterford that we have free and I'm trying to figure out if there is any location we could do by train or bus. If our flight out of Dublin is late afternoon on a Monday, does it make sense to try to travel to a place like Galway or Killarney or Cork or Limerick on Sunday Morning, see a bit there before taking a train or bus straight to Dublin airport Monday, or is that inadvisable due to timing and potential lack of public transportation?

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated!

With that time frame (looks like you have a full Sunday and Monday morning), I would recommend Kilkenny. It's pretty much on your way from Waterford to Dublin, and public transportation is available (the train stop is along the Dublin-Waterford line). There is plenty to do there for a day - Kilkenny Castle, St. Canice's Cathedral and its round tower, Smithwick's, some great pubs, etc.). You could spend the night in Kilkenny and then take your train to Dublin on Monday morning. I think the ride from Kilkenny to Dublin is a little under 2 hours.

The other places you mentioned are all great spots to see, but I don't think you have sufficient time to get there. Cork is over a 2 hour train ride from Waterford, and the other ones are even further, if trains run there at all. For example, to Galway, I believe you have to take the train to Dublin first, then switch, taking over 4 hours. And even if you rented a car or a bus, most of those places (with the exception of Cork) are quite a hike. So I'd recommend Kilkenny.

Thank you for the tip! Was thinking about trying to do that area on the way down to Waterford, but I'll think about switching it up and spending more time there on the way back. Thanks again!
