Hello. We're planning a 3-week trip to Ireland beginning in mid-September. We are trying to figure out if it would be best to just rent a car for the entire time or mix-and-match using a combo of rental cars, trains and buses. We'll be flying in and out of Dublin. After a few days there, we want to see mostly the west (think Lisdoonvarna/Galway) and then up to Connemara and then maybe on to Sligo, Donnegal and into Northern Ireland for a bit. Since we know folks in Clones (Monahan), we'll definitely stop there before heading back to Dublin. All advise welcome!
Use public transport in Dublin. Driving there is pure insanity. Outside of Dublin renting a car is the way to go.....it's flexible, fun and doesn't waste time waiting for and arranging Transport. Much of your route is fine M road highway and the rest are good N roads that aren't bad at all. Even if you go off on a small one lane, two way country road you get used to the flow quickly. It's not remotely as bad as some make out.
