Lost passport in Ireland

My son just arrived in Ireland yesterday and just called to say he discovered he lost his passport. He is beside himself as that is the only idea that he has. The last thing he remembers is going through customs and the person he is with believes she saw him put it back in his bag but he said he’s looked through everything and is beside himself as you can imagine. He is supposed to be at a wedding in a few minutes. Other than calling the airport to see if they have it does anybody have any suggestions about the best thing he is supposed to do if it doesn’t turn up soon. Thank you for your help!

Apart from finding out that there was a brain cramp and the passport was in hand all along,
going to the embassy to apply for a replacement (or perhaps an emergency replacement)
is what is required. Obviously, it's in Dublin. Also, best to report it to the local police just
in case this is a theft situation. Good luck.

Thank you so much! I guess I could have researched this myself, but I got into a panic. And truth be told I’m even more embarrassed because he just called me to tell me that he looked again and it was wedged in the backseat of the rental car! So we had a discussion about keeping it in a zipper, Inside another zipper! (and it’s his birthday today and he was missing part of a wedding. But now he can go and enjoy.) Thank you, again.

Obviously a call to the airport is good. However, a call to the embassy is also a good idea. I was with a friend last year who lost hers in Ireland so I will pass along what I know from that specific experience.
1. Passports are often turned in to the embassy, but it may not be immediate. Hers wasn’t at the embassy, but there were other missing passports there, looking for an owner.
2. She had to make an appointment online and in June, it took 2 days to get the appointment. No exception. Make the appointment as soon as possible.
3. Getting the necessary forms printed in order to fill them out was the hardest part.
4. There’s a photo place very close to the embassy that does the photos quickly.
5. He may need some other form of ID, which you can help with if he doesn’t have any with him.
6. It will be helpful if he has a photo of his passport.

Walking in to the embassy with all necessary documents, we waiting a couple of hours and walked out with a temporary passport good for 1 year. She had to pay full price for a new one, but was able to replace it free for a regular 10 year passport once she got home.

Edit: Oops, I missed your update, but glad there is a happy answer!

Thank you so much for taking the time to outline in detail about your friend’s experience navigating their (lost) passport experience in Ireland. It was still extremely helpful to read and, had he not found it, we would have cherished this information. ❤️So much kindness on this forum. Thanks again! Rhonda
