I am aware of abandoned village Slievemore on Achill, and small remains in Donegal. Looking for one closer to areas of: Cong, Birr, the Burren. I have seen photos of truly magnificent mansion ruins that tug my heartstrings that I would LOVE to see, sit and reflect. Suggestions please!!! Thankyou.
A little further south along the Wild Atlantic Way near Ballinskelligs we discovered The Cill Rialaig Project- a facinating effort to restore the ruins of a 1790s pre-famine village atop a cliff face overlooking the Atlantic. It is a tiny road off the Wild Alantic Way that takes you out to a very deserted, windy point with old stone buildings, some of which have been restored enough for an artists retreat. Absolutely a facinating place that we hope you can visit and also appreciate the difficult lives these people led.
I don't know if this fits your bill, or not. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moore_Hall,_County_Mayo
It is in County Mayo, on Lough Carrah. It was the home of an Anglo-Irish merchant and was burned during the civil war,
thank you
A few years ago I used a site that was exactly what you're looking for, Abandoned Ireland. But I just checked, and now it seems to have been changed to a platform to sell books of what used to be on the site. You might find those books useful, but it was disappointing to see the site was not the wealth of (free) information it was when I planned my last trip. I also used a site called Nobody Home.
If you're interested in monastic sites as well, there are a few lightly visited sites in the Burren, Corcomroe Abbey, and Kilmacduagh.
A couple other sites that might be useful, but they too are heavy on mopnastic sites:
Visions of the Past
Irish Antiquities
archimedes. Thank you so much!!!! I had seen the abandoned Ireland site: ahhhhh!!!!!! to actually be able to go and wander them!! So magnificent...and they call, don't they? I bookmarked the pages you sent. And...I found this http://megalithicireland.com/
We will probably do our "neolithic" trek from Sligo. And Rindoon, that is listed in Nobodys Home if we can make it. Thank you again!
