Looking for ideas for 2-3 days not too far from Dublin.

Greetings fellow travelers!

I’m looking for a place to relax a bit at the end of my trip to Ireland in August. First I’ll see Dublin, Derry and Belfast with friends, followed by a weeklong hiking trip in Kerry and Cork.

I’ll only have three days/two nights before I catch my flight back home from Dublin. Does anyone have a suggestion for a laid-back, pleasant area, accessible to Dublin where I can decompress after my two weeks of touring?

I’m an active woman in my 70s. Anything to do with greyhounds would be a plus as I have two (one from Ireland). :)

Howth or Glendalough, but they're more walking / hiking oriented, and you'll have done lots of that out West. How about Kilkenny? The Kilkenny Arts Festival runs from the 6th to the 16th, and St Canice's is lovely to visit whether or not there's classical music on. Under 2 hours from Dublin on the big green bus. (There is a dog track but I'm guessing dog racing might not be what you have in mind. Oh, and Kilkenny is famous for cats and you will see cat sculptures dotted around the place.)

Will be in Kilkenny in September and this is the list of things to do that I've put together for myself:

  1. Kilkenny walk RS guide
  2. Kilkenny castle and tour, 12 euro with one hour tour
  3. Rothe House and Gardens, 10-6, 10euro, check schedule for tour, Tours lasting 30/40 mins are provided when booked in advance
  4. Kilkenny Famine Experience, free, audioguide, 9-13 and 14-17, tour desk in middle of the mall
  5. St. Canice's Cathedral, 6.5 euro
  6. Kilkenny Design Centre, across from castle, Irish craft products
  7. If time, River Stroll (RS guide)
  8. The Whole in the wall Pub
  9. Black Abbey

We are also going to Glendalough/Powerscourt Gardens, but I think one would want a car there.

Thank you for the suggestions! Wow - Kilkenny sounds like a place I’d love and need to see, but I think I’ll save it for a trip when I have more time (and it’s off-season). I have printed out your suggestions.

I will, however, look into Howth and a couple places noted in an earlier post on 5/6. I’m sure I’ll need a day or two of rest before heading back over the pond.
