Looking for advice on sights and itinerary for my second trip, Galway and north

My friend and I are meeting in Galway in June for six nights and we're working on the details now. We're both flying out of Dublin on morning seven.

I had a very enjoyable first trip several years ago, and I'd like to do similar things without actually repeating anything. We both have places that our ancestors came from that we'd like to see (in Donegal and Fermanagh). From reading Rick's book, I am more inclined to see Derry than Belfast. I also would be interested in an emigration-focused site, and my friend wants to see the Giant's Causeway and go to the Aran Islands. Some nature and beautiful scenery would be great. Maybe a conveniently located stone circle?

To tell you what I've already done and where my interests are, I've been to the Dunbrody Famine Ship in New Ross, Cahir Castle, Mitchelstown Cave, the Queenstown Story in Cobh, Kinsale, Cliffs of Moher, Birds of Prey at Ailwee Caves, and visited some ancestors at a cemetery in Co Galway, then spent the last couple of days in Dublin. We did this in 9 days, 8 nights, and usually saw two sights a day. We also got really lucky and kept stumbling onto Michelin starred restaurants and I am just hoping that luck repeats itself.

She'll already have spent a few days each in Dublin and on the Dingle Peninsula. After meeting in Galway, we're planning to go to Inishmore for a day (or overnight, depending on when we arrive) and then we'll rent a car and head north.

Any specific places you enjoyed in Donegal or the north, including recommendations on where to base ourselves so we don't have to move our stuff every single night? Any sights that we should see on our way back to Dublin?

Thanks for your ideas!

Do not miss the Aran Islands. If possible, stay overnight in Inismore, the "larger" of the three. There are ancient sites there, and if you stay, you will experience the quiet and the locals, as not many stay. I recommend a B&B. The woman I stayed with is no longer taking guests, but this is an intimate situation. These people have stories to tell! Stop at the pub in the evening (there is only one, in Killmurvey.) You can walk from one end to the other, but take the local bus at least part way for the conversation. This island was one of the best experiences on my solo trip.

Given your interests, the Titanic Museum in Belfast is definitely worth a visit and I'd heartily recommend a stop at New Grange on your way back to Dublin.

Yes, I'd really like to stay overnight on an island! Since we're planning to do that the first day we meet up, we just have to hope the weather cooperates. Is it worth it to rent a bike on the island, or is the bus the way to go? We are both carry-on people, so no rolling suitcases to consider.

I think we're likely to do either Derry or Belfast, but not both. Any recommendations on which you've found more interesting, or which has good sights/accommodations nearby?

I am intrigued by Newgrange, so I'll do a bit of reading about that to see if it makes our list.

Thanks again for the ideas!

The town I know is Kilronan on Inis Mor. They have a hostel, which may work for your friend and you. I'm traveling with my girlfriend, she wants a double room. I only found a couple of B&B's on the island but neither offered a good double room because those are booked. We wanted to stay a night and rent bikes but I'm now thinking we'll only get to spend a day there. The ferries from Rossaveal (other ferries go from Doolin but Rossaveal is probably the better choice) are at 10:30, 1 and 6:30 pm. Ferries back are 8:15, noon and 5pm.

Newgrange is pretty amazing. Older than the pyramids in Egypt. It was probably the best sight I saw last time in Ireland.

The Ulster American Folk Park offers a number of exhibits focused on emigration. It’s about an hour’s drive from Derry and just a bit longer from Donegal.

Derry is worth a visit. The city walls make a fascinating walk. The Guildhall Square is photogenic and the museum within has fascinating exhibits on Irish history.

Giants Causeway is about a 1.5 hour drive from Derry, so you could drive there after spending a day and night in Derry.
