Greetings! My family (husband, myself, and two daughters that will be 5 and 3) will be traveling to Ireland next summer 2019. We are looking at staying for at least 4 weeks and want to live like locals. We prefer non-touristy experiences and would rather visit in a drizzle with less crowds than in sun with lots of people and lines. We also are looking for safer experiences (Skellig Islands are out for us) with having young kids in tow. We are foodies and appreciate healthier meals. What are the can't miss authentic experiences or places to stay for family fun? We do love good conversation and friendly people; that is one reason we are starting our international travel experience with Ireland. As of now we have not decided on if we are flying into Shannon or Dublin. Dublin has the Stork Exchange that we may get car seats from, but that can be decided once we have more of an idea of the places and experiences that are highly recommended. Thanks, we are so excited!
Just to narrow it down a bit, we have looked into spending the majority of our time around Kilkenny, Kenmare or Dingle, and west of Galway. If we spend time in Dublin it will most likely be at the end of our visit, when we are more acquainted with Ireland and can enjoy our experience in a large city. I have found Kilkenny to be a great central location for visits to Waterford, Tipperary, and Cork. We will be spending time seeing the ROK and are looking for a nice area to relax for a week or so there. Galway looks like a great town to feel trendy in yet be yourself. I am used to living near college students, and we usually wind down before late night events would start. We are hoping to find theater, music, dancing (lessons for girls?), art, history, castles, boat rides, and short nature excursions. A full day of shopping, extensive hikes, and driving are activities we want to avoid.
